Skylar Annette Neese (February 10, 1996 – July 6, 2012) was an American teenager who was murdered by two of her friends, Rachel Shoaf and Shelia Eddy, in Star City, West Virginia.
Background: Skylar was a bright and well-liked student at University High School. She was known for her academic achievements and aspirations to become a criminal lawyer. She had a close-knit family and seemed to have a promising future.
The Murder: On July 6, 2012, Shoaf and Eddy lured Skylar out of her house under the pretense of going for a late-night drive. They drove to a pre-selected spot in a remote, wooded area just over the Pennsylvania state line, where they murdered her. The motive was reportedly that they simply didn't want to be friends with her anymore.
The Investigation: Skylar's parents reported her missing when she didn't return home. The investigation initially turned up few leads. However, several months later, Rachel Shoaf confessed to the murder as part of a plea agreement. She led authorities to Skylar's body.
Legal Proceedings: Rachel Shoaf pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Shelia Eddy was tried as an adult and convicted of first-degree murder. She was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years.
Impact: The case garnered significant media attention due to the young age of the perpetrators and the seemingly senseless nature of the crime. It raised questions about teen violence, peer pressure, and the influence of social media. The tragic event deeply affected the community and continues to be a cautionary tale. It also led to changes in West Virginia law regarding missing children.
